Gurnee Park District issued the following announcement on June 15.

Summer 2020 is a new experience for everyone and while many programs, facilities and playgrounds remain closed due to COVID-19, Gurnee Park District is committed to providing various opportunities for our community. These are trying times for each of us and it is important to seek positive experiences in the midst of all of this.

While we are eager to open our facilities and programs, the health and well-being of our community is our utmost priority. We are committed to following the Governor's phased plan and guidelines offered by CDC, DCEO and IDPH, which is why the decision was made to cancel or modify many of our programs and facilities, close Hunt Club Aquatic Center for the 2020 season, and cancel Gurnee Days. While we cannot predict when we will enter subsequent phases of the plan, we are proud to offer some programs and services in person during Phase 3.

Our parks remain open for passive recreation like walking, running and biking and amenities like volleyball and basketball as well as tennis and pickleball. Pack a picnic lunch, take a walk or enjoy a bike ride at one of our many parks. I also encourage you to participate in Park N Play Field Days at Viking Park, Westgate Park, Ravinia Park, Betty Russell Park, Hunt Club Park or Vineyard Park. Download your scorecard from our website to compete in fun, track and field events through the end of June.

A variety of summer programs and activities are being offered with social distancing in mind. While traditional summer camp could not be offered this year, Summer Club is available to children going into Kindergarten through 6th grade. Additional summer programs and activities include virtual dance and sports classes, photography, and art classes and much, much more. As the phases of the Restore Illinois plan develop, our team will continue to provide updates and new opportunities for recreation. As you will see, Gurnee Park District continues to plan ahead for the fall. Due to the limited amount of programming, we have decided not to print brochures until we reach a future phase where more programming can be offered safely.

If fitness is your passion, FitNation is open for one on one personal training and also outdoor group exercise classes of 10 participants or less. Preregistration is required for group exercise classes at this time.

I take this opportunity to thank my team for working diligently to make sure we provided the most up-to-date information during COVID-19 and also planning and implementing various programming during this time while keeping our parks updated. I would also like to thank each of you for your patience. We are in this together!
