Dear Editor,
Here in Illinois, businesses are still struggling to recover from COVID-19. As a small business owner, I am as eager as anyone to get my business back to full speed and continue bringing employees back to work.
Unfortunately, our state lawmakers and lawsuits are making this task even tougher. Between juggling public health restrictions, lawsuits threatening to shut doors, and now a potentially huge tax increase if the progressive tax is successful on Nov. 3, small business owners like me will have to make tough decisions about laying off employees or whether we can remain open.
I hope voters will join me in voting no on the progressive tax constitutional amendment that will devastate small business owners and their employees who are especially struggling right now.
Giving government more taxing power, raising workers compensation costs and adding new taxes, is NOT the answer! We need our lawmakers to listen to small business owners and make sure workers can be employed in the first place and support businesses who are trying to bring them back. We need lawmakers on our side in this crisis if we hope to survive.
