GURNEE PARK DISTRICT: Youth Basketball Safety Mitigations

Gurnee Park District issued the following announcement on Jan 18.

A modified youth basketball league will be available according to the current Restore Illinois All Sports Policy.

Within the State of Illinois All Sports Policy, basketball has been classified as a high risk sport. High risk sports are to play within Level 1 guidelines. Level 1 protocols include no-contact practices and limit game play to training sessions. To comply with these guidelines, each age group will be divided into teams and will only practice within that group.

 League Overview 3rd - 8th Grade Boys and Girls Basketball Leagues 

  • Each age group will be divided into teams of 10 (Including coaches) – Per Restore Illinois Mitigation Guidelines
  • Age groups may be combined if numbers are low
  • All teams are coached by volunteer coaches. Two practices will be run by Gurnee Park District staff
  • Teams will meet once a week for 1.25 hour practices
  • Practices will be non-contact
  • League will focus on improving shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, positioning and conditioning
  • Teams will participate in a free throw contests, 3 point contests and team relays at the end of the season
  • In person player evaluations will not be held this season
  • Each player will receive a reversible jersey for the season 
 Safety Measures

  • Face coverings are required at all times for coaches and players 
  • Drop off will be curbside, no spectators will be allowed inside Hunt Club Park Community Center
  • Once team rosters are finalized, additional team members will not be added
  • All equipment will be disinfected between practices/scrimmages
