Less than a month before the April 6 election, mayoral candidate Dawn Abernathy used social media to defend herself against “false” and “unfounded” accusations about her past.

Abernathy is a village of trustees member and is running mayor of Mundelein against the incumbent.

“I feel it’s important that I talk to you then listen to you,” Abernathy said in a video posted to her Facebook page on March 11. “When you have accusations and falsehoods placed in your path, you have two choices, let them trip you up or address them with integrity.”

Abernathy’s concerns began when someone started circulating a political mailer hinting of interactions she’s allegedly had with police over the years with a family friend who once lived in the family’s home.

“I have known this person since her birth and fell for her like a daughter,” Abernathy said. “Public records will show she has been troubled for years. When we reach out a hand, there is always a risk. Sometimes those risks are surprising, but it’s always worth reaching out a hand.”

Abernathy is running against incumbent Steve Lentz, with Robin Meier and Tom Ouimet also on the ballot.
