City of Highwood Board of Fire and Police Commission Met Jan. 6.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

I. Meeting called to order at 6:06 pm.

II. Roll Call: Chairman Leon (absent), Commissioner Barnwell (present), Commissioner Bernstein (present)

Also present:

James Ferolo – Counsel to the Board

Jaime Litjens (City of Highwood)

Scott Coren (City Manager, City of Highwood)

Ronald Pieri - Respondent

Jolanta Zinevich – Counsel to Complainant Coren

Harold Saafeld – Counsel to Respondent Pieri

Kathy Bono – Court Reporter

III. Motion by Bernstein, seconded by Barnwell to approve the minutes of the December 18, 2020 meeting

Roll call: Leon – Absent

Barnwell – Aye

Bernstein – Aye

Motion carried

IV. Public comments

None

V. Coren v. Pieri

Continued hearing proceedings

Ferolo gave a recap of the votes taken on December 18, 2020 on the pending charges, indicating the Pieri had been found Not Guilty of the 3 criminal charges but had been found Guilty of 16 work rules related charges.

Penalty and Mitigation Phase

Complainant and Respondent both indicated that they wanted to call at least one witness each and to submit documents in support of their arguments regarding the proper penalty.

The Board set January 21, 2021 at 4:00 pm to resume the hearing on the Penalty and Mitigation Phase. The Board also set an alternative date of February 3, 2021 at 4:00 pm for such hearing.

VI. Motion by Bernstein, seconded by Barnwell to adjourn
