COVID-19 Updates

  • According to data from the CDC, the current seven-day positivity rate in Lake County is 5.44%. The case rate over the past seven days is 185.92 per 100,000, an increase of 17.62% over the prior period. (Data is accurate as of 5:00 PM on Friday, September 3.)
  • new CDC study finds that the number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations among people age 17 years and younger increased from June to August 2021, but the percentage of hospitalized kids and teens admitted to the ICU remained the same (1 in 5 children). Case rates were lower among children and adolescents in communities with high vaccination rates. To protect kids and teens from COVID-19, the CDC recommends that all eligible people should get vaccinated.
  • Data from a new CDC MMWR show that the hospitalization rate among unvaccinated adolescents (12-17 year-olds) was 10 times higher than among fully vaccinated adolescents. The report also found that hospitalization rates among children ages 0-4 increased 10x from late June to mid-August. CDC recommends adolescents get vaccinated as soon as they can and everyone ages 2 and older wear a mask in public indoor spaces (in areas of substantial or high transmission), schools, and childcare centers.
  • The FDA's guide to face masks now includes updated information for parents interested in researching masks for their children.

Hydrant Painting

Fire hydrant painting is now underway throughout Highland Park! The preparation and painting process takes approximately 4-6 weeks, weather permitting, and includes the following steps:

  1. Protecting and covering the surrounding area around each hydrant.
  2. Sandblasting each hydrant using an environmentally safe blasting aggregate to remove deteriorated layers of paint and rust.
  3. Priming each hydrant (the prime coat will look pinkish and must fully dry before a final coat is applied).
  4. Applying a high-quality, high-performance red urethane paint, which will provide a protective coating against any chipping, fading, or peeling.
Public Works operates and maintains approximately 1,775 fire hydrants located throughout the City as part of the overall water distribution system. This routine painting process helps fire hydrants last longer, improves operability and visibility, and makes them more aesthetically pleasing.

Please call the Public Works Department at 847.432.0807 with any additional questions.
