Dear Editor,
As a small business owner in Gurnee, I join the thousands of others like me in bracing for a tidal wave of new taxes and wage hikes that our lawmakers in Springfield seem determined to pass. This comes on the heels of restrictive public health measures and a surging COVID-19 delta variant.
Of all the times to show some grace to small business owners, now should be it. We are still recovering from the pandemic while costs are surging due to runaway inflation. To top everything off, we still don’t have the extended liability protections we need from damaging, often meritless lawsuits.
Right now, our leaders must change course and support our state’s struggling small business community. Further, they must make it easier for us to serve customers at a greater capacity. We are all trying our best to prioritize public health while also reviving the economy. Stacking unnecessary costs on top of us is guaranteed to stall our recovery and force small businesses to close.
