Long Grove village leaders would like to make the downtown area more accessible to pedestrians by extending sidewalks.
Village board members talked about the construction project during its virtual meeting on Nov. 22.
"This is going to get the extension from Buffalo Grove to us with the crosswalk that we have now at Sunset Grove," said Bill Jacob, village board president. "Now, when that connection comes in, people from Brier Crest, people from Buffalo Grove can now access our downtown, which they can't right now. There's no continuous sidewalk there. And this is tied to the widening of Aptakisic Road."
Trustees had a proposed an agreement with Lake County to make sidewalk improvements on Aptakisic Road. It is tied to the project that widens the road and would make a continuous pedestrian path into downtown for at least three neighborhoods.
The project is expected to cost the village $62,000. Thanks to the intergovernmental agreement with the Lake County Road Commission, the village is paying 20% for the multi-use pathway being put in. There are a few portions of the sidewalk that the village will take 100% of the costs for, but the majority of the project will be 20% village funded and 80% county funded.
The proposed project would make a continuous path all the way from downtown to Lincolnshire and the riverfront. It would be a huge boost for tourism and pedestrian accessibility in the village.
Once the sidewalks are installed they become the village’s responsibility for maintenance. The village voted to accept the project and go ahead with construction.
