Gov. J.B. Pritzker has tabbed longtime local weatherman Tom Skilling as a recipient of the 2023 Order of Lincoln, which for the last six decades has gone to Illinois residents who have made significant contributions to the state through their work.
Skilling, who joined WGN-TV in August 1978, is one of six honorees who were formally honored in April in a convocation ceremony at the Illinois State Capitol, according to WGN9.
“I couldn’t be prouder to announce this year’s Order of Lincoln recipients – Illinois’ highest honor for those undertaking incredible work across our state, uplifting their communities and serving the public,” Pritzker said in a news release. “These talented individuals embody the very best of Illinois, and I am honored to recognize them for their service and dedication to our great state.”
Joining Skilling as award winners are former first lady of Illinois Jayne Carr Thompson, seventh Archbishop of Washington Wilton Cardinal Gregory, Illinois State Rep. and Sen. Karen Hasara, Ariel Investments co-CEO John W. Rogers, and governor policy advisor Paula Wolff.
Skilling began his career at age 14 when he was hired by WKKD in Aurora. He was a student at West Aurora High School at that time. He joined WLXT-TV three years later, while going to school during the day, ultimately rising to the post of WGN-TV chief meteorologist, where he appears weekdays on WGN Evening News from 5-7pm, WGN News at Nine and WGN News at Ten.
Skilling will celebrate 45 years at the station this year.
