State Rep. Martin McLaughlin praised the efforts of those who run Honor Flights for veterans in a Sept. 26 Facebook post. He called those flights ‘an amazing experience’ for veterans. McLaughlin expressed his gratitude to the Honor Flight volunteers and organizers for providing Illinois veterans with such a special opportunity.
In his Facebook post, McLaughlin shared a link to a column in the News-Gazette where Champaign native Lee Smith wrote about his experience on a recent Land of Lincoln Honor Flight from Springfield to Washington D.C. Smith, a Vietnam War veteran, expressed his long-awaited desire to have an honorable welcome home, as many veterans from that era were not given the recognition they deserved. He wrote, "So, 52 years later, I had a second chance at 'another tour with honor.'"
The Land of Lincoln Honor Flights organization has completed five flights in 2023, from April to September, according to their website. These flights provide round trip transportation from Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield for veterans of World War II, the Korean Era, and the Vietnam Era who wish to visit their memorials in Washington D.C. Each flight is a one-day trip that includes air and ground transportation, meals and snacks, as well as commemorative items for the veterans.

McLaughlin's appreciation for the Honor Flight program stems from his recognition of the sacrifices made by veterans and their need for recognition and support. As a Republican state representative from Barrington Hills, McLaughlin has been serving in the Illinois House since 2020. His legislative experience includes serving on the Revenue & Finance and Prescription Drug Affordability committees.
The News-Gazette highlighted Lee Smith's military service in a profile, noting that he was sent to Vietnam in 1971 and came home with a Bronze Star for combat missions. Smith recalls the commitment of U.S. soldiers during that time, stating, "We had superior firepower... It didn't matter if you were drafted or enlisted. 'You did your job.'" Smith's story exemplifies the experiences of many veterans who served during the Vietnam War.
The Land of Lincoln Honor Flights will resume in 2024, providing more opportunities for Illinois veterans to visit their memorials and receive the recognition they deserve. For those veterans who don't think they're physically able to withstand the actual Honor Flight, the organization also offers a Flightless Honor Flight option.
State Rep. Martin McLaughlin's Facebook post serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring and supporting veterans. The Honor Flight program continues to provide meaningful experiences for veterans, allowing them to reflect on their service and receive the recognition they may not have received upon their return.
