The Lake County Sheriff's Office is in mourning following the loss of K9 Dax, just days after his retirement celebration.
According to a Lake County press release, K9 Dax sustained injuries on March 3 while apprehending a suspect who had committed several felonies and was attempting to flee. The incident resulted in damage to his neck and spine, leading to temporary paralysis. Subsequently, he was diagnosed with cervical and thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) and lumbosacral IVDD that were exacerbated during the March 3 encounter. Following this injury, K9 Dax underwent intensive physical therapy.
The team of veterinarians responsible for K9 Dax's care concluded that for his physical well-being, he would not be able to return to active duty, according to another Lake County press release. His retirement was celebrated by the community on April 10. However, despite these efforts, his health continued to deteriorate.
Sheriff John D. Idleburg expressed his sorrow over the loss of K9 Dax in a statement released by the Lake County press office. "K9 Dax will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we are incredibly saddened by his passing," said Idleburg. "K9 Dax will be remembered for the lives he saved, violent offenders he apprehended, and drugs he kept from being distributed in our community. Please keep the Forlenza family in your thoughts and prayers."
