Lake County Sheriff's deputies arrested three individuals for illegally possessing loaded firearms at approximately 11:45 p.m. on July 5. Deputies were responding to the 42400 block of North Route 41, Wadsworth, on a vehicle fire call.
According to a Lake County Sheriff's Office press release, Lake County Sheriff's 911 dispatchers collected information from a witness who reported seeing three people run from the stolen vehicle into the woods near a truck stop in the area. Descriptions of the suspects were relayed to deputies responding to the scene.
As they searched the area, a deputy saw three individuals who matched the suspects' descriptions get into an SUV that arrived near the scene. Deputies determined the SUV was being used as a rideshare and conducted a traffic stop. During their investigation, deputies determined the three were armed with loaded firearms.
The three individuals arrested were Marcus Smith, 19, of Zion; Trashaun King, 18, of Round Lake; and Barion Mhoon, 18, of Kenosha. The Lake County State's Attorney's Office approved four counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm for the three suspects. Petitions were filed to detain them while awaiting trial. After their first appearances in court, they were being held pending detention hearings on July 9.
According to the press release, the vehicle from which the three fled was stolen from North Chicago. The start of the vehicle fire was unclear. The Illinois State Police are investigating the vehicle fire as it was located on an onramp to the tollway. North Chicago Police are investigating the vehicle theft.
