The McHenry County Treasurer’s Office and the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office have issued a warning about a property tax scam targeting local taxpayers. The fraudulent letter, which appears to be from McHenry County Government, contains small print at the bottom disclosing it is actually from "Tax Registry LLC."

The letter urges recipients to contact the company to settle taxes, fees, and penalties. However, the amounts stated are fabricated. The only authorized entity for real estate tax collection in McHenry County is the Treasurer’s Office.

Officials noted that there is no known address for Tax Registry LLC and the phone numbers provided in the letter do not use local 815 area codes. Residents are advised not to respond to this mailing or contact the company regarding their real estate taxes.

For any questions about real estate taxes or if you have received such a scam letter, residents should call the Treasurer’s Office at (815) 334-4260. Victims of this scam are encouraged to report it by contacting either the Treasurer’s Office or the State's Attorney's Office at (815) 334-4159.

Both offices will continue collaborating to keep the public informed and safe from such fraudulent activities.
