On Independence Day, we celebrate this country’s ideals: liberty, democracy, and service to others. On July 4, 2022, first responders in Highland Park and throughout Lake County rushed to serve others even in the face of gunfire.
Since that day, many Lake County residents have lost their lives to gun violence, and many first responders have had to assist the wounded and comfort the grieving.
“No brother should fear dropping their younger sibling off at school, no aunt should fear taking their niece to a neighborhood BBQ, and no daughter should fear standing with her mother at a July 4th parade,” said State’s Attorney Rinehart.
Rinehart emphasized the need for continued efforts against gun violence. “We must pledge to all Americans who remain exposed to the dangers of gun violence that we will not stop and that this uniquely American problem will someday end.”
In addition to enacting a federal assault ban similar to Illinois' legislation, Rinehart highlighted other measures. “We must continue to invest in all communities to address the root causes of gun violence, expand the use of red flag laws to stop domestic abusers and others from accessing weapons, and hold accountable in courtrooms those who would take the lives and happiness of our friends, families, and neighbors.”
Rinehart called for unity across government branches and society segments. “All branches of government and all segments of society must come together to ensure that every American has the right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, AND lives free of the fear of gun violence.”
