The Waukegan City Council Committee of the Whole will consider a formal policy for the designation of honorary street names and the posting of honorary street signs by the Public Works Department. The committee will discuss the policy during its meeting on Sept. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
According to the Waukegan Committee of the Whole agenda for Sept. 16, Alderperson Keith Turner requested that the city adopt a formal policy. Alderpersons will discuss changes or additions to the informal policy staff has used.
The council's Public Works and Infrastructure Committee would review honorary street sign applications, according to the agenda. The sign's location will be limited to a single point or near mid-block. A $300 fee per sign and installation must be made before the sign is fabricated and installed. The two-faced sign will have white lettering on a brown background.
City crews will install the honorary street signs, which will be in place for 12 months, according to the agenda. Once removed, city crews will give the sign to the applicant and donate it to the designee's family.
The donator will maintain the sign installation, and replacement of materials will be at their cost, according to the agenda. The honorary street naming will be limited to one designation per ward each year.
