Vernon Township Republicans Chairman Jay Swidler said Stellantis' decision to reopen the Belvidere Assembly Plant underscores President Donald Trump’s pro-manufacturing leadership, in contrast to Governor J.B. Pritzker’s failure to support the industry. Swidler shared his comments with Lake County Gazette on Jan. 22.

"Trump’s impact in just two days highlights Pritzker’s inaction and inability to create real opportunities for Illinois families," Swidler said. "While Pritzker talks, Trump gets results, showing what true leadership can accomplish for hardworking Americans."

According to the Detroit Free Press, Stellantis plans to restart production at the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois and make additional investments in facilities located in Toledo, Ohio, and Kokomo, Indiana. In a letter addressed to employees, North America Chief Operating Officer Antonio Filosa credited discussions between Stellantis Chairman John Elkann and former President Trump regarding strengthening U.S. auto manufacturing.  

CNBC reported that Elkann outlined significant U.S. investments during meetings with Trump prior to his inauguration. The plans include reopening the Illinois plant to produce a new midsize pickup truck by 2027, creating 1,500 jobs, and producing the new Dodge Durango SUV at a Detroit plant. Leaders from Detroit’s Big Three automakers, including General Motors CEO Mary Barra, also met with Trump, underscoring the President's commitment to the U.S. auto industry.

Swidler was first elected as Chairman of the Vernon Township Republicans in 2024. According to the organization’s website, Swidler is focused on increasing Republican voter turnout, expanding Party membership, and communicating Party positions on issues important to Vernon Township voters.
