On January 28, 2025, a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to Fairmont School District 89. The request was made by Lake County Gazette, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

The FOIA request seeks access to all emails and memos from the past year that contain the keywords "Lucy Calkins" and "Units of Study". This is an effort to provide transparency in local government affairs and hold public institutions accountable.
