Following the arrest of Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in connection with the death of Antioch resident Megan Bos, State Representative Tom Weber expressed his concerns about Illinois' SAFE-T Act.
“The death of Megan Bos is a devastating reminder of what happens when our laws fail to protect the innocent,” said Rep. Weber. He emphasized that the discovery of her body on an illegal immigrant's property, who had been released due to the SAFE-T Act, was both disturbing and infuriating.
Mendoza-Gonzalez, a Mexican national living illegally in the U.S., faced charges for concealing a death, abuse of a corpse, and obstruction of justice. Despite these charges, he was released without cash bail under the SAFE-T Act. He was recently detained by ICE after living freely in Chicagoland for months. His arrest followed shortly after Megan’s mother shared her story with President Trump.
Rep. Weber expressed relief over Mendoza-Gonzalez's detention but called for legislative changes. “We cannot continue to uphold a law that forces judges to release dangerous criminals back into our communities,” he stated.
Jennifer Bos, Megan’s mother, criticized Governor J.B. Pritzker during an interview with Fox News: “I blame J.B. Pritzker… this is what he wanted.” Rep. Weber also urged Governor Pritzker to listen to families affected by such incidents.
