River Birch (Betula nigra), native to Riverwoods, is particularly noteworthy in winter due to its distinctive bark. Its often multi-stemmed habit provides ample branch structure at eye level, showcasing its curling bark that exfoliates in a variety of colors from creamy white to rusty orange and pale brown.
The ornamental value of River Birch includes excellent fall color and a showy spring flower display, offering multiple seasons of beauty. It thrives in full to partial sun and moist conditions, reaching a mature size of 40 to 90 feet tall.
The Native Tree & Shrub Planting Cost-Share Program aims to restore the ecological health of woodlands by encouraging residents to plant native trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plant species. Residents may qualify for this program with the Village covering half the cost of the plants and planting.
Properties may qualify for one or more of the Village's Cost-Share programs, which can help restore the ecological health of Riverwoods while improving ornamental landscapes and real estate value. To determine eligibility for these programs, residents are advised to request an Ecological Consultation with the Village Ecologist.
