On Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025, a fatal motor vehicle crash occurred on Northwest Highway (Route 14) in Barrington. The collision involved a 2020 Kia Forte, driven by 23-year-old Christopher Lopez of Cary, and a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by 43-year-old Robert Fryc, also of Cary.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Lopez was traveling northwest on Northwest Highway when he veered into the southeast bound lanes, striking Fryc's vehicle. Responding promptly to the scene were the Barrington Police and Fire Departments. Fryc was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital but was later pronounced deceased.
Following the crash, Lopez was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) and taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital for further DUI testing.
After reviewing investigation findings, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved one count of reckless homicide (Class 3 Felony) against Lopez. On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Lopez is scheduled to be transported to the Cook County 3rd District Courthouse in Rolling Meadows for a detention hearing.
