Granite City Community Unit School District No. 9 Board of Education voted to approve Granite City High School's reentry into the Southwestern Conference after a seven-season stint as an independent.
Granite City, which exited the SWC at the conclusion of the 2017-18 school year, will continue competing independently before officially rejoining the league for the 2026-27 school year.
"We felt as a district, with the additions of Triad and Mascoutah and the creation of two, five-team divisions within the Southwestern Conference, it was time for us to return," said Granite City High School Director of Athletics John Moad. "Our student-athletes and teams will have the opportunity to receive all-conference accolades and the opportunity to compete for conference championships. "
The Southwestern Conference consists of schools similar in size to GCHS and those faced in IHSA postseason play. According to Moad, all SWC schools are committed to providing a safe and fan-friendly experience at events.
Granite City was a charter member of the SWC when it formed in 1923. It left the league for ten years in the late 1970s when high school operations split into GCHS North and GCHS South.
