Hillary Halverson is a candidate for the Community Consolidated School District 46 (CCSD 46) Board of Education on the April 1 ballot.
CCSD 46 serves about 3,667 students across eight schools in Grayslake. Board members are elected for four-year terms from within the district boundaries. The board generally meets twice a month.
“As a former art teacher, a parent of school-aged children, and a Grayslake community member, I understand the importance of transparency, dedication, and teamwork,” Halverson told the Lake County Gazette. “These qualities are what I believe will drive positive change and ensure that our schools continue to thrive.”
Halverson pointed to financial sustainability as a key concern.
“I anticipate the most pressing issues will involve fiscal responsibility and sustainability,” she said. "It’s essential that we manage our resources carefully, ensuring that the district remains financially healthy while continuing to provide high-quality education to our students."
A core principle of Halverson's candidacy is the belief that a successful school board listens to the community.
“I believe a successful school board listens to the thoughts and wishes of the community,” she said. “I plan to carefully listen to concerns voiced by the community and ensure that the community feels represented.”
Her commitment to open dialogue with residents aims to foster an environment where all voices are heard and considered in decision-making.
Halverson also stressed the importance of collaboration and communication between various stakeholders in the district.
“Healthy relationships and clear communication between community members, school board members, and community leaders will help ensure the needs are understood and addressed,” she said. “Building strong connections is key to making sure that the district is responsive to the needs of its students and families.”
Looking to the future, Halverson’s ultimate goal is to create a district that is not only responsive but also competitive with neighboring districts in terms of educational opportunities and resources.
“My hope is that by working as a team and valuing the input from our stakeholders, our district will provide the educational opportunities and resources competitive with our neighboring districts,” she said. “We want our students to have access to the best possible education and resources, which will prepare them for success in the future.”
Halverson is running for one of four seats on the Community Consolidated School District 46 Board alongside Stephen H. Mack, Maureen Spizzirri Heun, and James Weidman.
