State Representative Tom Weber (R-Fox Lake), accompanied by House Minority Floor Leader Patrick Windhorst (R-Metropolis), State Representative Patrick Sheehan (R-Homer Glen), and Jennifer Bos, mother of Megan Bos, held a press conference calling for reforms to Illinois’ criminal justice system with a focus on the SAFE-T Act. The tragic death of Megan Bos has spotlighted issues related to cashless bail and restrictions on law enforcement and judges.
Megan Bos, a 37-year-old woman from Antioch, Illinois, was reported missing in February. Her family searched desperately until her body was discovered in April inside a trash bin behind a home in Waukegan. Jose Luis Mendoza- Gonzalez, the suspect in the case, admitted that she died at his residence but did not report it to authorities. Instead, he concealed her body for over 50 days. Despite these admissions, Mendoza-Gonzalez was released shortly after his arrest due to provisions of the SAFE-T Act classifying the charges as non- detainable offenses.
“We are still waiting for answers,” said Jennifer Bos. “I don’t know how my daughter died... But what I do know is that under the umbrella of the Safe-T Act, the man who hid her body... still got out of jail free. ”
Rep. Weber emphasized potential preventative measures: “If one person had called 911 instead of hiding the truth, Megan might still be here today. ” He added that several actions could have altered this outcome and prevented further grief.
The legislators argued that the SAFE-T Act has limited judicial discretion and weakened law enforcement capabilities significantly. They contend this has led to situations where criminals evade legal consequences\, leaving families like Megan’s in distress.
“The SAFE-T Act was supposed to enhance fairness\, but instead\, it has done the opposite\,” said Rep\. Weber\. “It has removed critical discretion from judges and allowed dangerous offenders to walk free\. Families are paying the price for this failed legislation\. ”
