The Lake County Sheriff's Office is collaborating with the Illinois State Police and over 200 law enforcement agencies in a traffic safety campaign targeting impaired and unbuckled drivers. This initiative will take place from June 20th to July 7th, covering three weekends around Independence Day.

To ensure safe celebrations, authorities advise designating a sober driver and preventing friends or family from driving under the influence. Other recommendations include handing vehicle keys to a designated driver before going out, using taxis, mass transit, ride-sharing services, or calling a sober friend or family member if impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or other substances. Impaired drivers should be reported to law enforcement by pulling over and dialing 911. Additionally, wearing seat belts is emphasized as it is both a legal requirement and a protective measure against impaired drivers.

The campaigns "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," "Drive High Get a DUI," and "Click It or Ticket" are funded by federal traffic safety funds managed by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). These efforts are supported by IDOT's "It's Not a Game" media campaign highlighting the serious consequences of impaired driving and unsafe driving behaviors.
