The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) has announced the annual Pumpkin Smash, a post-Halloween event designed to encourage residents to compost their jack-o-lanterns at designated locations, thereby preventing them from ending up in landfills.
According to SWALCO, the 2025 Pumpkin Smash aims to assist residents in diverting pumpkins and gourds from landfills by composting them. Participants are instructed to remove candles, decorations, and non-compostable materials, although non-toxic paint is permitted. The program underscores the environmental benefits of composting, such as reducing methane emissions, enriching soil with nutrient-dense compost, and preventing organic waste from overwhelming landfills.
Collection sites are scheduled throughout Lake County in November, including Wauconda, Gurnee, Round Lake, Vernon Hills, Highland Park, Grayslake, Lincolnshire, and Libertyville. SWALCO states that several locations will also offer BYOB (Bring Your Own Bucket) compost givebacks. This initiative allows residents to take home up to four five-gallon buckets of compost to experience its quality and learn about its practical applications for gardening and landscaping.
SWALCO supports communities and organizations interested in hosting their own Pumpkin Smash events by providing a comprehensive guide for planning, promotion, and execution. These events can be integrated with other initiatives like International Compost Awareness Week or Public Works Open Houses. Residents and groups are encouraged to contact SWALCO for assistance and resources aimed at educating the public on the benefits of composting and responsible organic waste management.
Formed in 1991 to implement Lake County’s 1989 solid waste management plan, SWALCO includes 45 municipalities representing approximately 85% of the population. The agency's updated plan in 2014 set a recycling goal of 60% by 2020; however, current rates stand at 48%, highlighting the need for expanded recycling and organic waste programs. According to Lake County officials, SWALCO's mission emphasizes a regional approach that balances economic, environmental, and political concerns while aiming to provide efficient waste management solutions.
