The Waukegan Park District has awarded $1,000 scholarships to five local students who have shown academic excellence and a commitment to community service. The scholarships, part of the Waukegan Park District Memorial Endowment Fund, were given to Shyanna Itza, Julian Mendoza, Yamileth Montejano, Ethan Mora, and Katherine Rivas.

These students were selected from the largest pool of applicants in the scholarship's history. To qualify, applicants must reside within the Waukegan Park District and be enrolled in a college, university, or trade school for the fall semester. They must also pursue studies related to parks and recreation.

The 2025 recipients will attend various institutions: Shyanna Itza at Butler University, Julian Mendoza at Roosevelt University, Yamileth Montejano at National Louis University, Ethan Mora at Hope College, and Katherine Rivas at Loyola University.

George Bridges Jr., President of the Waukegan Park District Board of Commissioners, expressed pride in supporting these students. "Education empowers youth to achieve their goals and turn their dreams into reality," he said. "Shyanna, Julian, Yamileth, Ethan, and Katherine will be great ambassadors of their community as they leave their mark on the world."

Jay Lerner, Executive Director of the Waukegan Park District, praised this year's recipients for their academic achievements and community involvement. "Their commitment to their education and drive to serve the community is commendable," he said. "The Waukegan Park District is delighted to support future leaders by investing in their education."

Past scholarship recipients have attended various prestigious institutions including Duke University and Smith College.
