Lake County Sheriff's Crash Investigators are examining a serious traffic incident that occurred Thursday evening in Beach Park, resulting in critical injuries to one driver.
According to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded at approximately 7:35 p.m. on June 26 to Lewis Avenue north of Beach Road following reports of a traffic crash with injuries. Upon arrival, deputies discovered three vehicles with significant damage.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 Mini Cooper, driven by a 52-year-old man from Waukegan, was traveling northbound on Lewis Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing the Mini Cooper being driven erratically before the collision. For reasons yet unknown, the driver crossed into the southbound lanes.
The release said that the Mini Cooper collided head-on with a southbound 2004 Buick SUV operated by a 34-year-old resident of Waukegan. Three children were also passengers in the Buick. Subsequently, the Mini Cooper struck a southbound 2018 GMC SUV driven by a 48-year-old woman from Zion.
According to the release, the driver of the Mini Cooper sustained critical injuries and was transported to an area hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The occupants of both the Buick and GMC were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Team continues to investigate the crash.
