July is Park and Recreation Month, and this year’s theme, “Build Together, Play Together,“ focuses on celebrating how parks create inclusive spaces. From quiet moments in nature to large community events, parks and recreation serve to connect, inspire, and help communities thrive.

At the June 25 meeting, the Park Board of Commissioners approved a resolution declaring July as Parks & Recreation Month in Highland Park. The resolution recognizes the various ways parks, facilities, and programs enrich the community.

Highland Park takes pride in offering parks, facilities, and programs that strengthen the community. Here are ten ways parks and recreation bring people together:

1. Providing green spaces for relaxation.

2. Hosting community events that foster social connections.

3. Offering recreational programs for all ages.

4. Supporting physical health through sports facilities.

5. Encouraging mental well-being with peaceful natural settings.

6. Promoting environmental education through nature programs.

7. Enhancing cultural awareness with diverse events.

8. Building friendships through team activities.

9. Strengthening family bonds with picnic areas and playgrounds.

10. Fostering civic pride by maintaining beautiful public spaces.

This July, residents are invited to explore, play, and connect within their community. The aim is to build a place where everyone feels at home.
