The Waukegan Park District is marking Park and Recreation Month, an initiative by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), to emphasize the significance of parks and recreation in local communities. The celebration includes free events such as Movies in the Park and a Community Yard Sale, providing opportunities for families to enjoy their neighborhood parks.
Since 1985, July has been recognized as Park and Recreation Month across the United States. Established by the NRPA, this month underscores the vital role that park and recreation agencies play in creating stronger communities. This year's theme, "Build Together, Play Together," honors the contributions of park professionals, including full-time staff, part-time workers, seasonal employees, and volunteers who maintain parks nationwide.
George Bridges, Jr., President of the Waukegan Park District Board of Commissioners, said: "The community is invited to celebrate Park and Recreation Month at their local parks. This month, the Waukegan Park District is showcasing how parks and recreation opportunities enrich the lives of individuals in the community. Local parks are so much more than just outdoor spaces; they are hubs where children and adults can be active, learn, and explore."
Jay Lerner, Executive Director of the Waukegan Park District, added: "The Waukegan Park District is celebrating Park and Recreation Month with free programs and events at various parks throughout the month. Parks are welcoming spaces that play a vital role in enhancing the health and wellbeing of the community. From Adelphi Park to Yeoman Park, I encourage individuals and families to spend time outdoors and discover a new park."
Both NRPA and Waukegan Park District urge people to share why their local park professionals matter on social media using #BuildTogetherPlayTogether. Details about July's free programs can be found at waukeganparks.org/july.
