Over the holiday weekend, the Marine Unit was active in ensuring the safety of individuals on the Chain O’Lakes and Lake Michigan. During a patrol at Petite Lake's sandbar, deputies noticed a teenage swimmer in distress. The swimmer was alone in deep water, struggling to reach her boat, which had drifted away. She called for help, indicating she was not a strong swimmer and could not stay afloat much longer.
The team responded immediately by maneuvering their patrol boat towards her, throwing a life ring, and pulling her from the 11-foot-deep water. The swimmer was safely rescued and reunited with her friends, uninjured but shaken.
"Our Marine Unit’s swift response and dedication potentially saved a life that day," said an official statement.
