The Lake County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Group (SIG), supported by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) – Chicago Field Division, and the Waukegan Police Department Community Crimes Division, has concluded an investigation leading to the arrest of a Waukegan resident.

Michael Lewis, 41, residing on the 0-100 block of Maple Avenue in Waukegan, was identified as a suspect selling cocaine in Lake County. SIG detectives obtained over 30 grams of cocaine from Lewis during their investigation. On July 9, 2025, SIG set up an operation to purchase more drugs from Lewis in Waukegan. As detectives attempted to arrest him, Lewis fled but was quickly caught.

Following the investigation's findings, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved several charges against Lewis: Unlawful Distribution of Cocaine within 500 Feet of a School (Class X Felony), two counts of Unlawful Distribution of Cocaine (Class X Felonies), two counts of Unlawful Possession of Cocaine (Class 1 Felonies), and Unlawful Possession of Cocaine (Class 4 Felony).

Lewis is currently held in the Lake County Jail awaiting an initial court hearing. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office plans to file a petition for his detention pending trial. It is important to note that all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
