The City of Highland Park has announced that sidewalk maintenance work will be taking place over the next month. The annual sidewalk grinding program, carried out by Safe Step LLC, will involve inspecting sidewalks and making repairs to address trip hazards in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The contractor will use a dry horizontal saw-cutting method designed to limit environmental impact. Saws are equipped with local exhaust ventilation systems intended to capture about 90% of airborne silica produced during the process. After repairs, the treated sidewalk panels will be level.
Additionally, the third year of a four-year sidewalk conditions evaluation program is beginning this week. Data from this effort will contribute to a comprehensive self-assessment of all city sidewalks and support development of the city's ADA Right-of-Way Transition Plan.
Contractors are expected to assess approximately 35 miles of sidewalk within Highland Park. They will examine sidewalks for defects, potential trip hazards, raised or cracked sections, and other obstructions. Contractors can be identified by their marked vehicles and reflective vests. Their work may require them to walk slowly or pause frequently as they document conditions but they will not enter private property or request personal information from residents.
