The Highland Park Public Works Department has announced several construction projects set to begin in September 2025. These initiatives will impact business districts, parking lots, and major roads throughout the city.

Tree pruning and holiday light maintenance are scheduled for the Central and Ravinia Business Districts over the coming weeks. The Forestry Section will address trees that conflict with structures, raise low branches, and remove deadwood. The work areas include Roger Williams Ave, Central Ave, St Johns, First St, Second St, Sheridan Rd, and Green Bay Rd. Work is expected to take three to four business days depending on weather and traffic conditions. Holiday lights will remain off until annual repair and replacement work begins the week of September 29.

The City’s contractor has been authorized to start tree pruning as early as 5 AM on September 29 and 30 in areas where parked vehicles during regular hours have prevented equipment access. Crews may also work on Saturday and Sunday mornings to reduce conflicts with parking and traffic. Interruptions to parking availability and increased noise from lift equipment and chainsaws are expected during business hours.

Moreno Landscape & Hardscape will begin installing holiday lights for the season starting the week of September 29. Nighttime work is planned to limit disruptions for pedestrians and drivers in the business districts. Downtown Highland Park will be addressed first before moving to Ravinia Business District in October.

Reconstruction of the Ravinia Train Station West parking lot is underway near Roger Williams Avenue, Burton Avenue, and the train platform. The project includes new paving, drainage improvements, curbs, sidewalks, updated lighting, and electric vehicle charging stations. Completion is targeted for December 5, 2025. The east portion of the lot will close temporarily during phase one while keeping the west side open; this arrangement will reverse in phase two. Access points will be completed during nighttime or weekend hours to accommodate local events.

Construction along Green Bay Road between Laurel Ave. and Homewood Ave is scheduled through early October with minimal obstruction anticipated for traffic or businesses. Lane closures managed by IDOT flaggers may occur as needed.

Skokie Valley Road resurfacing from Clavey Road to Lake Cook Road is part of Highland Park’s Capital Improvement Plan. Work begins September 8 with completion expected by October 30; one lane closure at a time will maintain two-way traffic flow throughout construction.
