Class 1 electric bicycles are now permitted on Vernon Hills Park District paths and trails, according to a recent announcement. These e-bikes require riders to pedal in order for the motor to engage, with no throttle function, and provide assistance up to 20 miles per hour.
The Park District emphasized that riders should follow safety guidelines, including staying on the right side of the path, announcing when passing others on the left, yielding to pedestrians, wearing helmets, remaining on designated paths, and avoiding sidewalks or parkland.
Other devices remain restricted from district property, trails, and paths. This includes Class 2 e-bikes—which feature both pedal assist and a throttle—Class 3 e-bikes with pedal assist up to 28 mph, as well as mini-bikes, trail bikes, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), go-carts, power-driven scooters, power skateboards, mopeds, hoverboards, and Segways.
"Love the outdoors! Be safe, respect others, and care for our parks, paths, and trails," stated the release.
