City of North Chicago Public Works Committee met Sept. 15

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

Alderman Evans called the meeting to order.

ROLL CALL:

Present: Jackson, Coleman (RP), Evans, Allen, Wray, Murphy, Brooks

Absent: None

I. DISCUSSION OF RESOLUTION APPROVING AND AUTHORIZING FINANCIAL COMMITMENT OF AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $250,000 FOR THE SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL (SRTS) GRANT IN SUPPORT OF A DISTRICT #187 MULTI-SCHOOL CROSSWALK/SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENT PROJECT:

Steve Cieslica, City Engineer (Trotter Associates) explained that the City was approached by the School District to apply for a grant to improve sidewalks. The grant had to flow through City, and it was administered through IDOT. Maximum amount was $250,000 and did not cover engineering fees, strictly for construction. If approved, it would be announced in May 2026, it would be budgeted after approval. Some of the locations were identified by the District. Lewis Ave was to be reconstructed but not sure when, if less than 5 years it would not be included in the sidewalk project, more than 5 years suggested the improvement by the City. He noted there were many gaps in sidewalks in various neighborhoods, would like to fill those gaps.

Alderman Allen clarified if the City would fund other costs. Mr. Cieslica explained the sidewalks were the city’s responsibility. He noted that there would be repairs to some sidewalks included with other projects.

Alderman Allen moved, seconded by Alderman Brooks that the Public Works Committee Meeting stand adjourned.
