On October 6, Baker & Taylor, a major supplier of books to schools, bookstores, and libraries across the United States, including Warren-Newport Public Library, announced it will cease operations. The company began winding down its services after a failed acquisition by ReaderLink and is expected to fully stop service in January 2026. This development is causing temporary delays in the delivery of new books to libraries.

Baker & Taylor is recognized as the largest supplier of library content, software, and services to public and academic libraries in the country. The closure was not anticipated by the industry. "This closure was not anticipated in the industry, so it comes as much a shock and disappointment to us as it does to you," the library stated.

Warren-Newport Public Library addressed the impact on its services, saying, "We want to be fully transparent with you, our valued readers. This shutdown will cause a delay in us getting the books you want. It will also affect the library’s ability to process books in a timely manner."

The library outlined steps being taken to address the situation. Staff are working to redistribute orders to other vendors. The library assured patrons that "your holds and your place in the queue will not be affected." Digital materials available through Libby and Hoopla will continue without disruption.

The library expressed understanding for the frustration this may cause and thanked patrons for their patience. "We understand this situation is frustrating and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this challenging time. We will stay in communication with you as more news unfolds."
