Beginning Jan. 1, Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) will be responsible for residential and commercial waste collection in Highland Park.
Residents and commercial properties will be able to maintain their current service plans and also choose from several new waste-disposal options for organic waste, electronic waste or bulk items. The company's radio-frequency identification system also will eliminate the need to use stickers on containers as early as next summer. Bags and bundles will still require stickers.
Collection rates for residential, commercial and multi-family units will fall across the board, though commercial and multi-family units will see some recycling rates go up.
The city said residents should receive a letter this month summarizing LRS' menu of services. LRS also will be in contact with business and multi-family units. All customers will be expected to switch containers sometime in December. Normal service will continue during the transition.
