The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced that on September 29, 2025, detectives arrested two men accused of defrauding an 80-year-old Green Oaks woman of $17,000. This arrest followed an investigation into a scam targeting the elderly resident.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the victim received a fraudulent email claiming a PayPal purchase she did not make and was instructed to call a phone number. The scammers gained access to her bank accounts, moved funds between them, and convinced her she had received an overpayment. On September 8, 2025, the victim withdrew $17,000 in cash and handed it to Danny Paio, 29, of New York. Chul Paik, 44, of Englewood, drove the rental vehicle used in the scheme.

Using license plate readers, sheriff’s detectives identified the vehicle and coordinated with regional law enforcement. Elmhurst Police stopped the car on September 29, 2025. This led to interviews and the arrest of Paio and Paik. Detectives recovered over $16,000 in their vehicle believed to be from another scam. The Lake County State’s Attorney approved two counts of theft against both men. According to a press release by Lake County Sheriff's Office, detectives continue investigating to recover the victim’s funds and identify additional victims while reminding the public that legitimate agencies do not request cash transfers to resolve billing issues.

Sheriff John D. Idleburg said: "This case is another reminder of how far criminals will go to target and exploit vulnerable victims." He expressed pride in "the work of our detectives" who quickly identified and apprehended these suspects and gratitude for "the ongoing collaboration we have with our partners across the region."
