Lake County has announced the completion of the $7.5 million White Deer Run Reservoir in Vernon Hills, a project aimed at enhancing water reliability and emergency preparedness for the Vernon Hills Water System.

Local officials marked the conclusion of nearly two years of construction with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The project adds two million gallons of storage capacity to the Vernon Hills Water System, aiding in meeting peak daily demand and maintaining service during emergencies. It serves approximately 33,000 residents and businesses in Vernon Hills, as well as parts of Libertyville Township, Knollwood, Rondout, Mettawa, and Long Grove.

According to Lake County's press release, the reservoir site was secured in 2021 through an intergovernmental agreement with the Village of Mundelein. Easements were arranged with Vernon Hills and Mundelein to ensure proper access and coordination for operations, maintenance, and long-term management.

The project is funded entirely through the self-sustaining Lake County Public Works Capital Improvement Program, which is supported by user fees. This initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize and preserve critical water and wastewater infrastructure. Current projects include replacing aging pipes over 70 years old, expanding storage capacity through both the White Deer Run Reservoir and the Gages Lake Water Tower, and connecting additional communities to Lake Michigan water.

Lake County Public Works manages water and sanitary sewer services across widespread areas of the county. The department operates 12 water distribution systems and three sewage treatment plants. Created in 1962 by the Lake County Board to address rapid post-World War II growth, it replaced small, unregulated treatment systems that lacked consistent quality control. Its mission includes providing reliable water and sewer services while protecting natural resources and supporting orderly development throughout the county.
