The Village of Mundelein Public Works and Engineering Department has been awarded $4.7 million in state grants for two projects that will make the village more pedestrian-friendly.

Approximately $3.7 million will be spent on a pedestrian overpass for the Canadian National railroad near McKinley Ave. The other $1 million will go toward building a walking path along Route 176.

“We are extremely excited to be receiving these very competitive grant awards,” Mayor Steve Lentz said.“These grants demonstrate how the village has positioned itself to be at the center of the transformation of the county’s multi-modal transportation network.”

The grants were obtained through the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) and the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) improvement program.

Both projects are expected to begin construction in 2018.
