Signage issues were front and center for the Deerfield Appearance Review Commission’s 7:00 p.m. Dec. 14, 2015, meeting at the Village Hall Conference Room, 850 Waukegan Road.
Chairman Dick Coen called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. In attendance were Beth Chaitman, Lisa Dunn, Sean Ehlke, Sherry Flores and Elizabeth Low, Village Planner Jean Spagnoli and Secretary Jeri Cotton. Jason Golub was absent.
With no public comments made, the commission went on to approve minutes from Nov. 23, 2015, with minor corrections.
Two separate businesses had issues regarding signage conformation: Sport Clips at 39 Waukegan Road and Sleep Number at 60 S. Waukegan Road. The commission wrestled with specifications, such as letter height, exact shading and the issue of using gradient colors because certain village requirements appeared to be in conflict with the legibility of each vendor’s sign.
Representatives from sign companies were present.
In a departure from the subject of signage, an architect representing a landlord proposed a building alteration to convert a former greenhouse into rentable quarters at Cadwell’s Corners Shopping Center. Overall, the commissioners felt the updates would be an improvement and asked for more documentation, such as a site and landscape plan.
Commissioner Ehlke mentioned LED lighting and its relationship to village regulations as well as the visual needs of aging individuals. The commission agreed to consider the matter.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
