Through direct collaboration between the city of Highland Park’s government and its public schools, Mayor Nancy Rotering named 16 Highland Park high school students Monday to serve as official representatives of city boards and commissions.
Area students can apply for this unique experience during their junior year of high school. Once approved by the mayor and city council, each can serve through senior year. All new appointees are members of the class of 2017.
Two students each were appointed to serve on the Human Relations (Izzy Arbetter and Jack Eichner) and Ravinia Festival Community Relations commissions (Katherine Grinell and Daniel Ross), while three were assigned to serve at the Sister Cities Foundation (Aaron Retsky, Olivia Varones and Henry Wolle).
Individual appointments consisted of Michael Natinsky to Business and Economic Development, Leah Canel to Cultural Arts, Jeremy Burroughs to Historic Preservation, Jack Foster to the Housing Commission, Ben Kramer to the Library Board of Trustees, Garren Kalter to Natural Resources, Andrew Chaet to Plan and Design, Charlie Deer to Transportation and Alexis Satterwhite to the Zoning Board of Appeals.
“The Highland Park Student Commissioner Program offers a unique experiential learning that engages students in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making,” Mayor Rotering said. “It is also critical for student career exploration. Our community benefits from student participation and the unique perspective each student provides as they work on policy related matters. We greatly appreciate their time and interest in serving their community.”
