For the first time, rising Lake Forest high school juniors are eligible alongside incoming seniors to apply for the unique chance to serve on Lake Forest’s City Board.
“Involvement in local government will help students develop lifelong leadership and business skills, and the time commitment is minimal,” City Manager Bob Kiely said.
Prior to this year, only seniors were permitted to serve. Now, municipal-minded students who will be either juniors or seniors during the 2016-2017 school year are invited to complete a volunteer profile sheet for the opportunity to be considered. The sheet can be obtained at Lake Forest High School at City Hall located at 220 East Deerpath Road or on the city’s website at www.cityoflakeforest.com.
With the application, students will be asked to submit a one-page essay explaining why they would like to serve and what mutual benefits would result for themselves and the city. Additionally, one reference letter will be required.
Interviews will help with placement for positions on the Library Board, which meets every second Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Parks and Recreation. All meetings take place at City Hall and are televised.
Students helping with the Library Board will have a chance to help with operating decisions, while Parks and Recreation student advisers will participate in matters concerning general recreation centers, the Deerpath Golf Course and Forest Park Beach.
Applications may be submitted up until March 4.
