Lake County State Attorney Michael Nerheim’s office will present “Beat the Blame Game” to change the culture of blaming victims 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 14 at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.
The creatively named program is free of charge and open to the public. Billed as a way to gain tools for bystander intervention and subtitled “a lively yet serious interactive program,” the event will take place in the lower level auditorium in Building C of the Grayslake campus.
Nerheim's office was recently granted $5,000 — out of 220 other applications — to sponsor the event as part of the nationwide 2016 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) April 10 through April 16. The Community Awareness Project (CAP) sponsored the grant.
Additional endorsement came from the National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators (NAVAA), which recommended the award based on the county’s outstanding public awareness campaign for crime victims’ rights and resources.
With final approval rendered from the Office for Victims of Crime, 2016 marks the second year that the Attorney’s Office received the funding.
This year’s theme, "Serving victims, building trust and restoring hope," assigns critical importance to the establishment of trust with victims in order to bolster their hopes for a full and dignified recovery.
Sponsors include the Lake County Juvenile Officers Association and the College of Lake County’s Judicial Services.
