In the wake of Flint, Michigan’s contaminated drinking water and President Barack Obama’s declaration of emergency for the locale, Highwood recently issued a statement clarifying the water issue for its own citizens.
Highwood’s water supply is derived directly from Lake Michigan, which is widely considered to be among the world’s purest sources. The city’s water treatment facility is regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and falls under its jurisdiction in conformance with the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Additionally, the city’s water is overseen by Illinois’ EPA. In accordance with state law, the water is frequently and rigorously tested to ensure that it meets the highest standards for potability.
“We are able to report that the department had no violation of a contaminant level or of any other water quality standard in the previous year,” Highwood officials stated that, as in previous years, the city’s tap water meets all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and state drinking water health standards.
