Zion’s City Council will partner with Beach Park village officials in a special 6 p.m. Wednesday meeting at Zion City Hall to study the feasibility of consolidating municipal fire protection services for both communities.
The consolidation is based on an existing study initiated and conducted by the Illinois Fire Chief Association. The analysis will help to determine whether the two jurisdictions would be best served by a consolidation of their respective fire services.
Currently Beach Park, located in the far northeastern corner of the state, relies on services orchestrated by its own fire department. Beach Park Fire Department is a combination department with both full-time and part-time employees supplemented by paid on-call firefighter-paramedics.
It is responsible for providing fire protection, rescue and emergency medical services to a district of approximately 10 square miles comprised mostly of Beach Park as well as some of the immediate unincorporated area surrounding the village.
In contrast, Zion runs a career department of 26 sworn personnel supplemented by 12 paid on-premise staff. The Zion Fire Rescue Department provides emergency services for fire suppression, emergency care and transport and specialized rescue. Additionally, the department offers public education on a regular basis.
Zion City Hall is located at 2828 Sheridan Road.
