With a fleet of hybrid vehicles, LED lighting upgrades and a 20-year plan for sustainability, the City of Highland Park is poised to tout its ecological responsibility for the 46th annual Earth Day Friday.
"We are committed to improving the environmental well being of our community and working toward a more sustainable future," City Manager Ghida Neukirch said. "The city's 20-year Sustainable Strategic Plan focuses on 10 main goal areas to improve levels of sustainability in Highland Park."
The plan can be accessed at www.cityhpil.com/sustainability.
Highland Park’s challenge to its citizens comes in the form of a question: “How are you celebrating Earth Day?” as the city seeks feedback from residents.
Taking action to enhance our planet comes in many forms, and the city has several suggestions, from conserving water and electricity to protecting the natural environment, from recycling and composting to education and community-cleanup projects.
Highland Park’s government itself uses 15 Prius automobiles and two hybrid buses to curb carbon emissions. The Public Works Department has installed LED lighting in public spaces.
City officials invite the public to share Earth Day plans and ideas. Pictures, stories are ideas can be sent to www.cityhp@cityhpil.com.
