Lake County is exploring alternative funding options after more than $3 million in federally earmarked funds for infrastructure and affordable housing were removed from the Fiscal Year 2025 budget. This development was announced in a press release on April 11.

In 2024, Lake County submitted several proposals through the U.S. House of Representatives Community Project Funding program to address infrastructure and affordable housing needs. Representatives Brad Schneider and Jan Schakowsky selected specific projects for advancement to the House Appropriations Committee, including sewer and water improvements in Antioch, Glennshire, and Forest Lake, along with plans for an affordable housing hub. According to the press release, these projects received committee-level approval.

In March 2025, a Continuing Resolution passed by Congress eliminated all Community Project Funding, resulting in the loss of over $3 million for Lake County’s approved projects. Around the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) notified Illinois agencies of a $153 million statewide reduction to public health grants. These grants support services delivered in part by the Lake County Health Department. Although that reduction is currently paused due to a court order, according to the press release, the County is working with its federal lobbyist to assess funding risks and plan for the continuation of essential services.

"It is important, now more than ever, for the County to have strong local, state and federal partnerships," John Wasik said. "We will continue to fight for every federal, state and local dollar to fund our county services and programs. Everything we do helps our communities be healthy, safe and thrive."

The Lake County Board consists of 19 elected members representing different districts responsible for approving the county budget, financial matters, and ordinances affecting government departments. Meetings are held in person at the County Administrative Tower in Waukegan or remotely via Zoom. Schedules and agendas are available online. The board convenes monthly for regular sessions along with additional committee meetings; all can be viewed live on LCTV.
