College of Lake County basketball player Daniel (D.J.) Ostrander and volleyball player Hannah Cassiday recently received the Skyway Conference Dick Durant Award.
Ostrander is originally from Lake Villa and graduated from Lighthouse Academy. Cassiday is a Spring Grove resident and graduated from Grant High School.
The award honors male and female student athletes for academic excellence in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference. To win the award, the students must attain the highest grade point average of all student athletes in the conference after two years of academic work.
This includes completing an average of 12 hours of college work in each term with at least 48 semester hours and a cumulative GPA equivalent to a B.
The award is named after Dick Durant, a teacher, coach and athletic director at Elgin Community College from 1961 through 1985 who was known for his sense of fair play, putting education before athletics and for his concern for all his students.
