Drobinski: State political reform starts with redistricting, term limits

Vote 05

As a supporter of the Independent Map Amendment and term limits, Rod Drobinski, Republican candidate for the District 62 State House seat, recently remarked on the redistricting issue both on Facebook and in a statement recently made to the Schaumburg Township Republican Organization.

“I’m running to represent the people in the 62nd district in the statehouse, and term limits are absolutely necessary here in Illinois," Drobinski said. "But the political reform does not stop there. We need redistricting reform, and we need (the Independent Map Amendment.)”

Polling conducted at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale has revealed that approximately 4 out of 5 Illinois residents support term limits, but historically, efforts to implement them have been crushed repeatedly. The pattern itself illustrates the need for a redistribution of power.

Drawing the line in favor of such an initiative on 2016’s ballot, Drobinski critiqued the current gerrymandered boundaries as less than desirable.

“If you look at the district maps here in Illinois, they look like something my 4-year-old would have drawn,” Drobinski said. “That is because for far too long, politicians have been allowed to choose their voters instead of the other way around.”

The candidate followed up his statement with a Facebook post, acknowledging that the spotlight has been focused, the curtain has been pulled back and the issue can no longer remain hidden.

“Should politicians get to lock in incumbents and deter challengers from running by drawing legislative districts that look like a drawing (a child) would make, or should we have an independent, impartial, transparent process for drawing legislative maps?” Drobinski said on Facebook. “Why don't we let the voters decide?”
